Broad Run beats down Brentsville 53-13

This is what happens when talent works hard.          Brentsville District (0-3) managed to keep pace defensively with Broad Run (3-0) for the first drive of the game Friday night in Ashburn but after that, it was all Spartans all the time as the home team trounced the Tigers 53-13.          By the time sophomore David Hammond scored Brentsville’s first touchdown on a 32-yard run with less than two minutes left in the second quarter, Broad Run already had a 46-0 lead.          “We got whooped on up front at first and it took us a while to get started. They came ready to play and got [us on a] slow start,” said wide receiver Chris Spinks, who added one more Tiger score just before halftime when senior quarterback P.J. Borko connected with him on a 20-yard pass.          Broad Run proved to be the complete package.          The defensive line and linebackers routinely found their way into the Brentsville back field. During the scoreless second half, Broad Run stopped the Tigers during their only real scoring threat when Anthony James and Jacob Dunds smeared back up quarterback Blake Alexander for a sack on fourth-and-four inside the red zone.          “Our defensive linemen just get off the ball like no one,” said line backer and running back Kenny McAdow.Offensively, starting quarterback Chris Jessop put the Spartans on the board twice in the first quarter by passing to Kevin Sanderson on a 7-yard TD and later rushing the ball in the end zone from 30 yards out.          Between Jessop’s scoring drives, Mike Cotton stepped up for the Broad Run special teams by blocking a punt, which David Weaver returned for one of his two touchdowns on the day.          McAdow poured a little salt in the Brentsville wound by accentuating the six-point return with a two-point conversion. He later rushed for a touchdown of his own in the second quarter, putting Broad Run on top 39-0.          “The way we run the routes, we really manage to open up a lot of lanes,” McAdow said, giving credit his team offensive line.          Film study showed Broad Run, which plays in the Dulles District, that visiting Brentsville tended to employ a 3-5 defense, so they had a good idea what they were up against versus the Northwestern District Tigers. It turned out though that coach Dean Reedy’s squad “ran everything against us,” said relieving quarterback Tim Miscovich (2 TD), including 4-4 and cover-three set ups.          That’s where the offensive line came in handy.          “Well they hit you hard. I knew they would. They play hard,” said Broad Run coach Michael Burnett of the Brentsville defense. “And I thought they got right after us early. In the first series, they stopped us. And I had a feeling they would. They’re tough kids, they play hard. You know, I just think honestly we probably had a few more athletes this year. And that happens; some years up, some years down.”
