Brentsville boys, Battlefield girls heading to states
The Brentsville boys soccer and baseball teams both won in extended affairs yesterday in the semi-finals of the Region II tournament as the baseball team won 4-3 with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning and the soccer team outshot Orange County 5-4 on penalty kicks to clinch a 1-0 OT victory.
Meanwhile, the Battlefield softball team beat down North Stafford 4-0 on the road in Stafford while the girls soccer team staved off Colonial Forge long enough for a 1-0 win.
By winning in the semi-finals of the regional tournaments, the two teams from Battlefield and two from Brentsville earned spots in the championship rounds. The top two teams from regions go on to states; that means, even if all four of the Brentsville and Battlefield teams lost in the title games, they would still be granted spots in the state tournament.
All four teams play Friday for their respective regional titles. Here is the schedule:
Brentsville at Park View boys soccer: 6 p.m.
Loudoun Valley at Battlefield softball: 6 p.m.
Woodbridge at Battlefield girls soccer: 7 p.m.
Broad Run at Brentsville baseball: 7 p.m.
While the Brentsville boys teams celebrated Wednesday, the Brentsville girls soccer and softball teams had their seasons cut short with losses in the regional semi-finals. The softball team lost a 5-4 heartbreaker to Loudoun County when the tying Tiger run was thrown out at the plate in the bottom of the seventh to end the game. The girls soccer team also lost its second straight game - its only two losses of the season - yesterday against Charlottesville, dropping 5-1.
