Child dies in Gainesville crash

Police have charged a Manassas man with involuntary manslaughter in the alleged drunken driving death of an 8-year-old boy in Gainesville.

On Tuesday, police announced that Rodney Aaron Martin, 22, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.  On Monday, Martin was taken into custody in Warren County and on Tuesday, he was transported to the Manassas Adult Detention Center, where he is being held without bond until his June 13 court date. He had already been charged with driving under the influence after police said he crashed into a van in Gainesville on Sunday morning.

On May 11, at approximately 5:57 a.m., Prince William police officers responded to a crash at the intersection of Lee Highway and Somerset Crossing Drive in Gainesville. A 2004 Honda Odyssey van had stopped at the red traffic light to make a left turn from northbound Lee Highway onto Somerset Crossing Drive. Police said the van had stopped in the (right) left turning lane when a 1998 Toyota Tacoma truck, driven by Martin, drifted into that lane and rear-ended the van.

The van held three occupants: a 20-year-old male driver and two passengers: a 52-year-old female and an 8-year-old boy. The driver was treated at the scene for his injuries while the woman and the boy were flown to an area hospital. The boy had been lying down in the rear seat without a seatbelt and was thrown forward into the center console, causing severe injuries. At 2:55 p.m. he succumbed to his injuries. He has been identified as Joshua Adams, 8, of Westomorelenad Drive in Warrenton.

Martin, who resides on Quarry Street in Manassas, was transported to a local hospital and was treated for his injuries. He was then charged with driving under the influence and was released on a magistrate's summons. He was then arrested again on Monday and was charged with involuntary manslaughter.
