Board aproves Park Valley Church

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve Park Valley Church in Haymarket, allowing the 400-family congregation plan a move out of their current home at Alvey Elementary School.

Church officials had asked for a Comprehensive Plan amendment that would allow them to build and hook into the sewer lines in the Dominion Valley area.

The Planning Commission had recommended against the proposal, fearing that it would open up the Rural Crescent to more development. However, the planning staff supported the church's request and Supervisor John Stirrup (R-Gainesville) said church leaders have been very cooperative in working with county officials to ensure that their church benefits the community without detracting from the rural area.

Coles Supervisor Marty Nohe (R) suggested that the county should make it easier for churches to hook into sewer lines. He argued that if Jesus were to come before the board, supervisors would grant him a sewer hookup and they should therefore do the same for churches.

Brentsville Supervisor Wally Covington (R) voted against the Comprehensive Plan amendment but in favor of the rezoning request that went along with it. The other seven supervisors voted yes to both.

“I've learned never to vote against God,” said Neabsco Supervisor John Jenkins.
