GDLL seniors win district tournament, berth to states
The Gainesville District Little League senior all-star team won the Virginia District 10 championship Monday evening with a 6-5 win over Lower Loudoun, propelling the GDLL team to the state tournament.
First baseman Turner Meeks came up huge with a grand slam in the fifth inning that put Gainesville on top 5-2. He also hit a solo homerun in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1.
Starting pitcher Jake Conway (6 Ks, no walks) not only won the game but earned the save as well. Manager Dave Pastor moved the 15-year-old hurler to second base in the top of the sixth inning while the team clung to a 6-5 lead.
With two Loudoun runners on base and no one out in the seventh, Conway took over for reliever Rob Seise and mowed down Loudoun 1-2-3 thanks in part to a game-ending diving catch from shortstop Danny Drzal.
Gainesville District plays the District 5 champion Mechanicsville 1:30 p.m. Friday in the first round of the state tournament in Stephens City (Frederick County), just south of Winchester along Interstate 81.
