Bobcats send two, Raiders one to gymnastics regions

Stonewall Jackson junior Meghan Hammel and Battlefield sophomores Mandy Brown and Katie Surface qualified to appear at the Northwestern District regional championship by placing in the top eight in multiple events Thursday night at the Cedar Run District finals in Manassas.

Hammel was the only gymnast not from Osbourn Park who earned a trip to regions in the all-around category. Her total score of 36.550 placed her in the fourth and final qualifying spot, 0.150 points above Sara Mogavero of OP.

Brown came in seventh in the all-around with a 35.925 score. While she will not be advancing to regions in the all-around, her seven-place finish on the floor (9.2) and fifth-place finishes on vault (9.150) and the uneven bars (8.950) allowed her to advance in those individual events.

Surface had a surprisingly strong showing on the beam, coming in fourth with a 9.075. Her 8.750 on the bars granted her a trip to regions in that event too as she came in seventh place.

Battlefield missed moving on to regions as a team by ending the night with 135.475 points. Though the Bobcats had consistently out-performed Loudoun Valley throughout the season, the Vikings stepped up their game in the last two matches, besting Battlefield last weekend at the Aloha Classic () and again Wednesday night at districts by finishing second with 138.325 points.

Stonewall Jackson (121.075) came in fourth place over all.

Home-team Osbourn Park annhiliated its opposition by posting team scores above a 36 in all four events, meaning that the top-four Yellow Jackets finishers per event averaged at least a 9.0. In fact, only on the balance beam did OP finish below a 37 (36.700). The defending Group AAA state champions won districts with a cumulative score of 148.975.

Yellow Jackets Megan McDonald (37.750), Jacquie Teets (37.025) and Kayla Deitz (36.700) rounded out the top three in the all-around and are set to appear at regions. Their teammates Sara Mogavero (36.400) and Briana Knox (36.125) just missed the cut for all-around due to Hammel's fourth-place showing.
