Tiger girls hang on at regions to clinch state berth

Brentsville survived a wild affair Thursday night in the Northwest Regional semi-finals as they hung on to beat Freedom (South Riding) 52-51.
The game at the Tigers' home court in Nokesville came down to two missed shots by the Eagles in the final 10 seconds of the game. After the second shot came back down, a massive battle for the loose ball ensued in the paint without the ball hitting the floor. When it finally flew out of bounds, the baseline referee signaled Freedom had knocked it out with 2.7 seconds remaining.
Tiger guard Chelsie Tooke caught the ensuing inbounds pass from teammate Ali Ruotolo and drew a foul 1.6 seconds later.
Ruotolo then lobbed the next inbounds pass over half court to point guard Keyla Baltimore, who held on until the game clock expired and hordes of Brentsville fans rushed the court.
The Tigers are scheduled to appear in the regional championship Saturday in Charlottesville. If they win, they will be a top seed heading into the state tournament. If they lose, they will still qualify for states, though as a lower seed.
