Potomac stuns Stonewall, region with 60-59 win

The Potomac Panthers pulled out the shocker of the winter sports season Tuesday night in Manassas, beating previously undefeated Stonewall Jackson 60-59 on the Lady Raiders' home court in the semi-finals of the Northwest Regional tournament.
With only milliseconds remaining in the fourth quarter, 6-foot, 3-inch Potomac center Lynetta Kizer pulled put up a bank shot that went through the net as the buzzer sounded. The referee counted it and the Potomac players and fans alike stormed the court in celebration.
"It was just like, I got to make it. I got to make it," said Kizer, an All-American player. "This is for us. This is not for no personal goal, it's not for myself: it's for my team."
"Most importantly, we didn't follow through and execute when we needed to execute," commented Stonewall coach Nsonji White.
Senior guard-forward Gwen Washington, the other All-American on the court and leader of the Raiders, missed two critical free-throws with her team up 59-58.
Potomac then called a timeout after rebounding the ball with 15.1 ticks remaining.
However, Stonewall seemed like it would pull out the game with 5.4 seconds left on the clock as junior Samantha Jordan blocked a shot from the Panthers' Tajia Johnson.
The Panthers retained possession, however, and  a missed shot from Kyana Jacobs fell into Kizer's hands, allowing the senior to deposit the walk-off, game-winner.
"They gave us their best shot, but it feels good," said Kizer, recovering from her tears of joy after the game.
"Everybody did their thing."
