Morres breaks record at state swim meet

The Brentsville District boys swimming team added yet another state trophy to the school’s already impressive treasure chest from the 2007-2008 school year, earning third place at the Group AA state championship last weekend in Manassas.

More impressively, junior Alexander Morres broke the state record in the 100-yard breaststroke.

His mark of 0:57.79 shattered the old record by 0.41 seconds.

As it turned out though, it was to be a much-needed accomplishment.

Second-place finisher Travis Stauder of Jefferson Forest High School finished just 0.32 seconds behind Morres, 0.09 seconds ahead of the previous state record.

Morres’s first-place showing in the 100-yard breaststroke was not the only gold the junior brought for the Tigers either.

In the 200-yard medley relay, Morres, Michael Hughes, Jordan DeGayner and Matt Smith teamed up to rake in a first-place title of their own.

The boys clocked in at 1:37.47, a mere 0.4 seconds away from the six-year-old state record set by Tabb High School.

Hughes, Morres, DeGayner and Ryan Dunne earned second-place honors as well for their collective performance in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Todd McGraw of William Byrd High School joined Morres as the only other swimmer to set a new state record as he sped through the 200-yard individual medley in 1:51.26.

McGraw also won the 500-yard freestyle while Morres came in sixth for that event..

Brentsville also registered two other top-five finishes.

DeGayner, a senior transfer student from Wisconsin, earned fifth in the 100-yard butterfly.

Freshman Nicole Haynes came in fifth in the 100-yard backstroke for the girls.

The girls finished 18th out of 39 total teams with 37 points, putting the Tigers in the top half of all contenders.

Jamestown won the boys’ contest (248 points) and Lafayette came in second (228) while Brentsville’s 160 points placed the Tiger boys third out of 39.
