Battlefield boys send seven to states

The Battlefield boys swimming team captured one silver and three bronzes last Saturday in Manassas at the Northwest Regional final, qualifying seven swimmers for states in the process.

Justin Bogle, Bobby Duggleby, Kenny Heidel, Kevin Lee, Andrew Martin, EJ Tremols and Nick Tremols will all be heading to Patriot Aquatic Center at George Mason University in Fairfax to compete for the state championship on Feb. 8 and 9.

While none of the boys won an event, Duggleby and Nick Tremols had particularly impressive outings at regions.

Duggleby earned second-place honors in the 100-yard breaststroke, completing his laps just one quarter of a second behind winner Matt Penning of Woodbridge High School. Duggleby’s time of 1:03.12 was 2.82 seconds ahead of eighth-place finisher Lee. Teammate Christopher Dailey earned two points for the Bobcats by coming in 15th.

The senior also captured fifth place in the 200-yard freestyle relay by teaming up with Lee, Tim Fririchs and EJ Tremols. He then took third in the 200-yard medley relay with Heidel, Martin and Nick Tremols also leading the charge.

That race was not the only time Nick Tremols found himself with a bronze at regions either.

In fact, he earned four of them.

Tremols completed the 200-yard individual medley in 2:03.78, came in less than four seconds behind winner Jake Lucas of Liberty High School in the 100-yard butterfly and helped Martin, Heidel and his brother EJ in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Overall, the Battlefield boys’ team tallied 252.5 points at regions, putting the team in third place out of 22 teams that scored points. Albermarle dominated with 331 total points and Battlefield’s Cedar Run District rival Osbourn came in second with 297 points.

The girls had a less successful outing as none of them registered a top 10 finish in any event.

Laura Crider competed in the most events for Battlefield, placing in the top 20 in both the 200-yard medley (17th) and 100-yard butterfly (18th). She was also a member of the 400-yard freestyle (15th) and 200-yard medley (16th) relay teams.

Stonewall Jackson freshman Kelly Fini, however, cracked the top 10 twice.

Her 1:52.55 time in the 200-yard freestyle placed her sixth for that event and she followed up with a seventh-place showing in the 500-yard freestyle, 14.22 seconds out of first place.

In the relays, Fini teamed up with Brooke Rodriguez, Erin VanBuskirk and Carrie VanBuskirk twice to clinch top 15 finishes. The relay teams came in 13th in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:48.28) and 14th in the 200-yard medley (1:51.25).

The Raider girls' score of 40 points placed Stonewall up 18th overall, well behind regional victor Osbourn Park (308). Battlefield earned six points and a 21st-place finish.
