Bobcat girls, boys sweep at invitational meet
The Battlefield indoor track teams managed to clean up shop Saturday in Haymarket with a combined 18 first-place finishes out of 30 events between the boys and girls during the Bobcat Blizzard Invitational.During the quad meet also featuring runners from Bishop Ireton, Spotsylvania and North Stafford, many familiar faces catapulted Battlefield to victories as veteran-heavy teams dominated the day’s events.
Dominique Evans stood out as the only Battlefield athlete to capture two individual titles for the day. Her long jump of 15-08 put her in a solid first place while her triple-jump of 33-04.5 turned out to be just enough to edge out Chrissy Nevers of North Stafford by 7.25 inches.
Maria Bruno and Shannon Anderson teamed up twice to win as part of the 4x200 and 4x400-meter relay teams to capture the gold for Battlefield. Both of their teammates on the 4x200 squad came away with individual victories in other events, however. Genevieve Johnson darted to first place in the 55-meter dash (7.52) and Nikkisha Walker completed the 55-meter hurdles 0.05 seconds faster than fellow Bobcat Ivy Mumo (9.52).
Erin Smith and Ayana Ames rounded out the victorious 4x400 team, which clocked in seven seconds before their counterparts in Bishop Ireton (4:47.63). North Stafford finished third in 5:03.
Mumo shone on her own in the 300-meter dash with a time of 45.88 seconds. Diana Budreika followed up in the 1,600-meter run with a first-place time of 5:43.05, and Brea Zeise rounded out the No. 1 titles for Battlefield with a pole vault of seven feet, six inches.
On the boys’ side, Battlefield’s nine golds were completely spread out as no athlete earned more than one, though David Burnham certainly made things interesting. His 4x200-meter relay team, also featuring Robert Garland, Stefan Evans and Everett Drew, clinched the top spot in that event by exactly four seconds over North Stafford.
Burnham eventually placed second in two other events. He was knocked out of first place in the long jump by teammate Byron Sintim (19-06.5), and he earned a No. 2 spot in the triple jump after leaping 29-04.5 feet.
Robert Porter and Nathan Moyer also captured wins with silver-seconds in separate events. Porter’s 55-meter-dash run of 6.89 seconds earned him a gold while his pole vault of 9-feet-even put him six inches behind first-place finisher Alex Hurd of North Stafford.
Moyer won the 1,000-meter run by topping teammate Matt Shaughnessy by just 0.96 second. Meanwhile, the 4x400-meter team he competed on alongside side Shaughnessy, Franklin Vaughn and Ross Forry ended up 2.22 seconds out of first place.
Other top finishers for the Battlefield boys included Tyler Smith in the shot put (43-07), Max Dove in the 55 meter hurdles (8.23), Darren Driscoll in the 3,200 meter run (10:25.67), Gary Martin in the 1,600 meter run (4:47.22) and Sebastian Paniagua in the 500 meter run (1:08.64).
