Brentsville teacher accused of sex crimes with students

A Brentsville District High School teacher has been charged with having “inappropriate sexual contact” with two students who attend the school.

On Dec. 6, the Prince William Police Department announced that officers had arrested Anthony K. Haywood, 27, of Launch Circle in Manassas. Haywood is a phys ed teacher at the school and was charged with two counts of indecent liberties by a person in custodial or supervisory relationship.

According to Officer Erika Hernandez, a spokesperson with the county police, Haywood is accused of having "inappropriate sexual contact" with two 16-year-old girls who attend the school. She would not elaborate on the allegations but said the students were the ones who reported it.

"He may have started back in January ... with at least one of the students" she said, explaining that the incidents may have been ongoing for almost a year.

The teens reported the allegations to police on Dec. 3 and Haywood was taken into custody on Dec. 5. He was released on a $5,000 bond pending a hearing in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

Hernandez said none of the alleged incidents occurred at school or during school hours.

Ken Blackstone, a spokesperson for the school division, said on Monday that Haywood is in his third year teaching at Brentsville. He has been a gym teacher at the school for all three years and it is the only education job he has had.

Haywood has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.

"It's a very tragic and unfortunate situation," Blackstone said.

It's also not the first sex crime Brentsville has seen this season. In October, a 15-year-old BDHS student was arrested for allegedly raping a 14-year-old classmate in one of the school bathrooms after school had ended for the day. That case is also being handled by the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

Shortly after the gym teacher's arrest was announced on Dec. 6, principal Robert Scott sent an email to parents explaining the situation and reiterating that none of the alleged crimes took place at the school.

"The superintendent’s staff and PWCS Risk Management Office have been aware of this situation since it arose and did not hesitate to place Mr. Haywood on administrative leave when police investigators determined that there was enough evidence to pursue warrants," he wrote.

Scott added that a guidance counselor and members of the mental health team would meet with Haywood's classes this week to allow students to ask questions and express concerns.
