Ringing in the season

The winter holidays officially began in Gainesville on Nov. 22 with the lighting of the Gainesville Christmas tree at Virginia Gateway. In addition to the lighting of the giant tree, the event was also marked by entertainment and a visit from Santa Claus.

The City of Manassas will ring in the holidays this weekend, starting with the city's annual tree-lighting ceremony on Friday, Dec. 5. Santa Claus will arrive at the Manassas Depot on the VRE train at 6 p.m. and the tree-lighting will take place on the lawn of the Manassas Museum at 6:30 p.m.

The evening will include music from the Resounding Joy Handbell Choir from All Saints Church, free hayrides and a chance to talk with Santa at the Harris Pavilion. The Manassas Museum will also be offering free admission as part of its annual Holiday Open House.

The festivities continue on Saturday, Dec. 6, with the annual Greater Manassas Christmas Parade through Old Town. Floats, local celebrities, marching bands, horses and balloons will all be featured in the parade, which runs from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The parade will begin at Mathis Avenue and travel down Center Street into Old Town.

And on Sunday, Dec. 7, the merchants of Old Town will be offering refreshments and entertainment from noon until 5 p.m. Santa Claus will be out and about again and free horse-drawn carriage rides will be offered from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

The weekend's events are sponsored by Historic Manassas Inc. For more information, visit the group's Web site at www.visitmanassas.org or call (703) 361-6599.
