Stakes horses headed to Old Dominion
Possibly the most tantalizing point-to-point card of the season awaits fans at Old Dominion this Saturday, as two of Virginia's top stakes horses are primed for their '08 debuts.
Two-time Virginia Gold Cup winner Miles Ahead will line up in the featured Leeds Don open timber at the April 5 meet, prepping for the $100,000 Gold Cup May 3.
The undefeated 2005 champion faces 10 others, including Casanova winner Floor Play and Piedmont winner Professor Maxwell.
Miles Ahead won this race in '06, but was away for 18 months before returning to win last fall's Genesee Hunt Cup.
Kinross Farm stablemate Sur La Tete, who's closing in on the $1 million mark in 'chase earnings, will line up with a field of seven in the two-mile open hurdle.
Sur La Tete made just one start last year, second in the $150,000 Iroquois, but he won at Old Dominion in '06 in his sole prep for that weight-for-age stake (which he won).
Rounding out the card are maiden and amateur hurdles, ladies, owner-rider and foxhunters timber, Virginia-bred and novice rider flat races and a junior field masters chase.
The Old Dominion Hounds Point-to-Point is held at Ben Venue Farm in Ben Venue, 16 miles west of Warrenton in Rappahannock County. Post time is 12:30 p.m. for the first of nine races.
