Airport access road lanes to close this weekend
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority announced Tuesday that portions of the Dulles Airport Access Road will be closed this weekend.
Beginning at 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, and ending at 5 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30, a section of the westbound lanes of the highway will be closed to allow the installation of a large overhead directional sign.
For the safety of motorists, traffic heading to Dulles Airport during these times will be shifted around the construction activity to a single lane of the eastbound lanes of the access road near Route 28, the Airports Authority said in a release. Traffic will then be shifted back to the westbound lanes near the entrance to the airport. Message boards will be placed to inform motorists of the detour, and Airports Authority Police will be assisting with traffic control.
The Airports Authority is urging drivers to allow extra time to travel to Dulles Airport between 10 p.m. on Saturday and 5 a.m. on Sunday, especially passengers arriving for flights early Sunday morning.
Traffic on Route 28 will not be affected by this detour.
This detour is necessary to erect permanent directional signage, part of the Airports Authority’s $56 million roadway improvement project. A series of new ramps and secondary roads are under construction near the Dulles Airport Access Road and Route 28 to allow vehicles to merge more easily, resulting in better traffic flow through this critical area. The roadway improvement project is expected to be completed in spring 2008.
