Hospital hosts safety fair for children
Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, near the intersection of Route 50 and I-66, will be hosting a safety fair on Saturday, Oct. 6, designed to teach children about safety.
Several booths, including a surgery and ultra sound simulator, and modules will be accessible from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Children and their families can learn about several safety initiatives like the new booster seat law, lunch box nutrition and poison control.
The first 100 families to visit each booth will receive free giveaways.
Children's consignment to benefit charities
A children's consignment sale at the Prince William County Fairgrounds in Manassas on Friday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. will benefit local charities.
Classy Kids Consignment is an annual clothing consignment festival that brings children's vendors, the Prince William County Sheriff's Department, the Manassas Volunteer Fire Department and Big Red the Clown to participate in the fun.

Benefit for liver disease patients
Border Cafe, 5825 Trinity Parkway in Centreville, is hosting a silent auction to benefit the American Liver Foundation on Sunday, Oct. 7 in honor of a former Burke resident who passed away from acute liver failure.
Gifts cards, theme baskets and other products will be available and bidding will begin as low as $5.
Josephine Heppner was the oldest of four children. She passed away last year after a virus suddenly attacked her liver and left her brain dead before she could get a transplant, according to Jennifer Rossi, a friend of the family.

Mountain View celebrates Constitution Day
On Monday, Sept. 17, Mountain View Alternative High School celebrated Constitution Day with a moment of reflection and thanks to our fighting men and women around the world. Michael Frey was also in attendance.
Veterans honored at local football game
Several veterans were honored at the Sept. 20 Westfield High School football game, an honor initiated by an instructor and a parent.
When Stephen Panoff, the school's band director, and Roger Kodat called Dave Meyers, captain of the Burke VFW Post, to ask for help, he gave them the names of four veterans.
Walter Bieder; Barnard Jennings; John Swart; and George Tankard were honored at the game.
Meyers asked the veterans to participate in the ceremony to convince the high schoolers that there are real war heroes, he said.
Giant Food offering vaccinations
Giant Food LLC, in partnership with Maxim Healthcare, is now offering influenza and pneumonia vaccinations in the pharmacy departments of select stores through Saturday, Nov. 17.
The Centers for Disease Control states it is especially important for children and people 50 years and older, reside in a nursing home and who have health problems to get vaccinated.
Maxim will provide Giant with the personnel and vaccine for the clinics. Flu vaccinations will cost $30 and pneumonia vaccinations will cost $40. There is no charge for Medicare beneficiaries with Part B coverage.
