On March 17, Interim Chief Jane Nichols retired amid a bunch of mis-conceptions. I would like the truth to be known.She is not a spoiled brat or a bad person. Yes, she gave 28 years of her life to the Gainesville Police Dept. and yes, she was paid a salary. Police Officer's make lot's of money. Thats why most of them take second job's to support thier familie's.
In December, Kip Padgett met with Jane and asked if she would be Interim Chief and after the fiscal year began in July be willing to take the chief job. Jane agreed but specified that she DID NOT want a raise in pay and add what the raise would be to budget to keep from furlowing patrol officer,s. After the first of the year, Padgett told Jane to make a list of non-esential personell to be laid off. Jane informed Padgett all the personal were essential and needed the job to survive. Padgett did not like being dis-obeyed so a few day's later the job for Chief was posted on website. This was a big surprise to Jane as this was totally contradictory to what she had been told. Jane turned in her resignation as Padgett knew she would. On March 17 at 4pm, the people and officer's planned a good-bye party for Jane. On March 17 Padgett called a meeting of Police Captains to discuss running of department. Guess what time the meeting was called? The City Council is also aware of these going-ons. I just hope they all can sleep at night after all the back-stabbing during the day. We do at least still have a fine Police Dept. if Padgett doesn't ruin it. Good luck to them.
