Small Business Should Embrace Diversity

I had a long list of reasons to move to the Gainesville area when I relocated from Texas. One reason, as a Black Male and father of an Interracial Family, is the cultural and ethnic diversity evident in this region. Which is why I am saddened that a new business; located within the Target Shopping Center, adjacent to Five Guys, decided to close its doors on me when I tried to walk in and get service.

Tonight, I attempted to walk into the barber shop and either get a haircut or to determine which time would be best to return (I work in Downtown DC and I don't have a lot of hours in any-given day to take care of personal needs). I arrived at least 30-minutes prior to their posted closing time. However, the employee rushed to the door as I was coming in and locked it. I am not sure whether it was because I am black, but I feel that is the reason because she had a look of horror on her face. I was in a suit, tie, and overcoat with my identification badge hanging from my neck. Also, there was a customer inside the store. There was no reason for the reaction I received and I am saddened that I am writing this letter. I will be sending this same letter to every newspaper within the region, to the Better Business Bureau, and the licensing body that grants business licenses in Virginia.

Thank you.
