Reducing Peak Demand

Is alpinism becoming a less popular sport?

Your guess is as good as mine, but the type of peak demand reduction I’m referring to – load management – is unrelated to mountaineering and is actually one of those better energy solutions I mentioned in my intro blog…

What is peak demand, why is it important to reduce it, and what can you do to lighten your load?

In electricity lingo, peak demand refers to those times when consumers – industrial, commercial, institutional, as well as residential – are using the most electric energy, traditionally during the summer months.

Power supply has to meet power demand all year long, so…

Implementing ways to reduce peak demand in every end user category on the hottest days of the summer will reduce consumption of electric energy at the very times it’s needed most.

Did you know that NOVEC’s load management program provides an automated way for residential customers to help save energy during peak demand times?

Here’s how the program works: Within a few days after a customer calls to enroll, a technician installs switches free of charge on the outside air conditioning units.  During the summer months these switches are activated automatically during peak demand periods only, via a transmitted signal that cycles the units off for no more than 7.5 minutes out of every half-hour.  The activation of the switches generally does not cause any noticeable change in the comfort level within the homes of participants.  NOVEC’s brochure provides more info.

If NOVEC is your service provider, have you considered enrolling your household in this program, or, if you’re already enrolled, have you encouraged your friends and neighbors to enroll?  Switches can be installed year-round, weather permitting.

Remember that I mentioned in my intro blog that we all need to develop a better understanding of our household electric profiles to take actions that promote policies that are appropriate for the 21st century.

Stay plugged in because two more ‘better energy solution’ posts are coming soon.  I’m energized and hope you are too.  These posts will remain positively charged but will get progressively more political over the next few weeks.  That’s the plan anyway!
